SUGAR LAND, Texas– Texas Water Utilities, which provides water and wastewater services to more than 138,000 Texans, directly invested more than $80 million in 2023 to keep water safe and flowing in the state. The investment includes infrastructure reinforcements, repairs, replacements, weather emergency preparations and improved system monitoring and communications services within the 38 counties where the organization operates. The 2023 total investment is nearly double what the utility invested in the previous year, as infrastructure continues to expand and improve to meet increased customer demand amid state population growth.
According to the Texas Water Development Board, Texas’ population is projected to increase by more than 70 percent, from 29.7 million in 2020 to nearly 51.5 million in 2070. On average, the state is growing by 43,600 people per year.
“Over the past 26 years, Texas Water Utilities has steadily invested in water and wastewater infrastructure,” Jeffrey L. McIntyre, president of Texas Water Utilities, said. “As our communities grow, we are dedicated to providing high-quality and reliable service to all customers. Water is a valuable resource, and these investments aim to improve our state’s water infrastructure to meet current and future water demands.”
Texas Water Utilities’ investment priorities for 2023 included innovation, growth and capacity. The utility deployed innovative new techniques to improve the clarity and flow rate of drinking water in service areas, upgraded select water meters to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), rehabilitated water wells and elevated water storage tanks, and expanded water treatment facilities.
