SouthWest Water Company recently recognized five Hays Consolidated Independent School District (Hays CISD) middle school students as winners of its writing contest. This was the first year that SouthWest Water Company opened the writing contest to all middle schools in Hays CISD. SouthWest Water Company has offered this writing contest to Chapa Middle School each year since 2016. The finalists each received a $100 Visa gift card, and the grand-prize winner received a $500 Visa gift card. Students submitted expository essays that discussed (1) the importance of water in their life, community, the state or the world today, or (2) an issue related to water conservation in the modern world. The essays were scored anonymously by a panel of Hays CISD English/Language Arts teachers. Sofia Caballero, the grand-prize winner, was recognized during a campus event. She received a $500 Visa gift card and her essay was published in the June 6 edition of the Hays Free Press.
