Texas Water Utilities Announces System Improvements to Reduce Water Hardness

You are here: Home / News / Texas Water Utilities Announces System Improvements to Reduce Water Hardness

Texas Water Utilities (TWU) is committed to providing safe, high-quality, and reliable water service to you and your community. We are pleased to inform you that recent system improvements have reduced water hardness levels in your area to approximately 40–50 mg/L. Additional details regarding these improvements and potential impacts to residential water softening systems are provided below.

Source Water Characteristics

Groundwater in Central Texas, including the Hornsby Bend area, is naturally hard due to the region’s geology. As water moves through extensive limestone formations, calcium and magnesium minerals dissolve into the supply, resulting in elevated hardness levels.

To address this, TWU has incorporated treated groundwater purchased from EPCOR, sourced from the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer, which is significantly lower in mineral content. The current supply is a blended source consisting of approximately 90% Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer water and 10% groundwater from TWU’s three wells, resulting in significantly reduced hardness levels for customers in Hornsby Bend.

Residential Water Softeners

Customers who utilize in-home water softening systems may wish to evaluate and adjust their equipment settings in response to these changes. For assistance, TWU recommends consulting a licensed plumbing professional.

System Reliability and Supply Continuity

To ensure continued reliability, TWU will maintain operational access to the system’s three groundwater wells, which draw from the upper alluvial terrace of the Colorado River. These wells serve as a critical supplemental source during periods of drought or other disruptions, supporting both public health and fire protection needs. TWU will provide notification to customers in the event of any significant or sustained changes to the water supply.

Water Conservation and Leak Prevention

TWU encourages all customers to practice efficient water use to help preserve local water resources. This includes promptly identifying and repairing leaks within household plumbing systems, as even minor leaks can result in significant water loss over time. Customers who repair verified leaks may be eligible for a leak adjustment. Additional information is available at: www.swwc.com/texas/.
