Blue Granite to Consolidate with South Carolina Water Utilities

We are thrilled to share that South Carolina Water Utilities has been approved by the South Carolina Public Service Commission to consolidate with Blue Granite Water Company! This marks the largest water utility consolidation in South Carolina’s history and represents a significant milestone in our commitment to providing safe, reliable, and affordable water and wastewater services. By bringing these utilities together under one structure, we can make more strategic infrastructure investments, streamline operations, and continue improving service for customers across South Carolina.

Below are the answers to some frequently-asked questions:

  • Will Blue Granite Water Company change its name?

Yes, Blue Granite Water Company will be rebranded as South Carolina Water Utilities.

  • How will this consolidation affect Blue Granite customers?

The consolidation brings together over 70,000 customer connections across the Midlands, Piedmont, and Upstate under one utility. This will enhance service reliability and operational efficiency, ultimately improving customers’ experience. We are updating our billing systems, and Blue Granite customers may receive a bill with a shorter or longer billing cycle. Billing cycles will naturally level out to normal.

  • When is the effective date of the merger?

The consolidation was approved by the South Carolina Public Service Commission and will take effect on July 1.

  • What are the benefits of this merger?

The integration aims to streamline operations, manage expenses effectively, and invest strategically in infrastructure improvements statewide. This is expected to enhance service quality and reliability.

  • How has SCWU performed since managing Blue Granite’s systems?

Since SCWU began managing Blue Granite’s systems in 2024, we have successfully reduced costs, improved system reliability, and increased customer satisfaction. We have notably decreased boil water advisories by over 80%.

  • Will there be any changes to my water rates?

No. There are no rate changes; this is a consolidation of companies. This consolidation is designed to provide long-term rate stability. Any proposed rate increases would go through a lengthy approval process by the South Carolina Public Service Commission, and you would be notified in advance. The consolidation is expected to lessen the impact of potential future rate increases.

  • How will customer service be affected by this consolidation?

We anticipate that this merger will strengthen customer service and improve response times as we combine resources and enhance service quality.

  • Who can I contact for more information about the consolidation?

If you have any questions regarding the consolidation, please reach out via email at scwuinfo@nexuswg.com or call us at 800-367-4314.
