BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – SouthWest Water Company has awarded $1,000 cash scholarships to four Birmingham-area students who plan to make engineering their main focus of study in college.

The recipients include Pelham High School’s Kane Agan, who will study biology and civil engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham; Kalie Danielczyk of Birmingham, who will study engineering at the University of Alabama; John Mason IV of Hoover, who will study engineering at the University of Alabama; and Justin Thai of Birmingham, who will study civil engineering at the University of Alabama.

SouthWest Water noted the recipients have demonstrated academic achievements during their high school careers. They also have achieved an exemplary record of community service and participation in school extracurricular activities, the company stated.

SouthWest Water Company operates water treatment services in parts of Shelby County.

“As a company that is charged with protecting the world’s most valuable resource, we feel responsible for encouraging the next generation of leaders in our field,” SouthWest Water Company Managing Director Craig Sorensen said in a press release.
