Essential Summer Safety Tips for a Fun and Worry-Free Season

Summer Safety Tips

Summer is here, and that means it’s time for road trips, family activities, and plenty of fun in the sun! To help keep everyone safe and healthy all season long, review some basic safety tips and precautions.

Driving Safety

  • Stay Alert: Always look out for work crews, especially in construction areas and work zones. Keep an eye out for pedestrians and bicyclists as well. If you’re feeling tired, pull over and rest.
  • Avoid Risky Behavior: Distracted driving, speeding, and impairment are all preventable risks. Obey posted speed limits, never drink and drive, and stay off your phone until you’ve reached your destination. And don’t forget to buckle your seatbelt!
  • Follow Weather Warnings: Check local forecasts before you hit the road. Summer can bring rapidly changing weather conditions like thunderstorms, flash floods, and even tornadoes. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle with basic repair tools and first aid supplies.

Heat Safety
  • Stay Hydrated! Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Consume water throughout the day to maintain hydration as your body sweats. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which cause the body to lose water more rapidly. And don’t forget your pets – always ensure animals have access to fresh, cool water.
  • Take Frequent Breaks: Avoid prolonged sun exposure. Take breaks in the shade or indoors with air conditioning if you’re able to. Only exercise in the early morning, before the sun is at its peak.
  • Cool Down: Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing. Take a cool bath or shower to bring your body temperature back down after a day in the sun. Learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of a heat-related illness in case overheating does occur.
